Abstract

Background: Nephrology and urology encompass a broad spectrum of disorders affecting the kidneys and urinary tract, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury (AKI), glomerular diseases, urinary tract infections, nephrolithiasis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and urological malignancies. The global prevalence of renal and urological disorders continues to rise due to aging populations, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and lifestyle-related risk factors, contributing substantially to morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs.

Objective: This review aims to summarize the current understanding of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and evidence-based management of common nephrological and urological disorders, highlighting recent advances in clinical practice and emerging therapeutic strategies.

Methods: A narrative review was conducted using contemporary clinical guidelines, systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, and observational studies from peer-reviewed medical literature. Evidence regarding laboratory investigations, imaging modalities, renal function assessment, minimally invasive urological procedures, pharmacological treatments, and multidisciplinary management was synthesized.

Results: Advances in nephrology have enhanced early detection and management of kidney disease through improved biomarkers, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) assessment, albuminuria screening, and kidney-protective therapies, including sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system blockade. In urology, innovations in endoscopic surgery, robotic-assisted procedures, laser lithotripsy, and precision oncology have significantly improved patient outcomes while reducing perioperative morbidity. Early diagnosis, risk factor modification, individualized pharmacotherapy, and timely surgical intervention remain central to preventing disease progression and preserving renal function.

Conclusion: Effective management of nephrological and urological disorders requires a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach integrating preventive care, accurate diagnosis, evidence-based medical therapy, and advanced surgical techniques. Ongoing research in precision medicine, regenerative therapies, artificial intelligence-assisted diagnostics, and biomarker discovery is expected to further improve renal preservation, urinary tract health, and long-term patient outcomes.
