Abstract
Medical imaging and point-of-care diagnostics have revolutionized modern clinical practice by enabling rapid, accurate, and non-invasive evaluation of disease processes. These diagnostic modalities complement clinical history, physical examination, and laboratory investigations, allowing healthcare professionals to make timely and evidence-based decisions in diverse healthcare settings. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the principles, indications, advantages, and limitations of commonly used imaging techniques, including conventional radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography (PET), and echocardiography. Emphasis is placed on selecting the most appropriate imaging modality based on clinical presentation, diagnostic yield, patient safety, and cost-effectiveness. The chapter also explores the expanding role of point-of-care diagnostics, including portable ultrasound, bedside blood gas analysis, rapid infectious disease testing, cardiac biomarkers, glucose monitoring, coagulation testing, and handheld diagnostic devices, which facilitate immediate clinical assessment and prompt therapeutic intervention. Advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital imaging, teleradiology, and image-guided diagnostic systems are discussed as transformative technologies that enhance diagnostic precision, workflow efficiency, and personalized patient care. Radiation safety principles, contrast media considerations, quality assurance, ethical issues, and appropriate utilization of diagnostic resources are highlighted to ensure responsible clinical practice. Furthermore, the integration of imaging findings with laboratory results and clinical reasoning is emphasized to improve diagnostic accuracy and optimize patient management. By understanding the strengths and limitations of both conventional imaging and bedside diagnostic technologies, clinicians can provide faster, safer, and more effective healthcare.
