Abstract
Clinical medicine is built upon the integration of scientific knowledge, patient-centered care, and sound clinical judgment. Over recent decades, evidence-based practice (EBP) has become a fundamental component of modern healthcare by promoting the use of the best available research evidence alongside clinical expertise and patient values to guide medical decision-making. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the foundational principles of clinical medicine and the evolution of evidence-based practice as an essential framework for improving diagnostic accuracy, therapeutic effectiveness, patient safety, and healthcare quality. It discusses the core elements of clinical assessment, including history taking, physical examination, differential diagnosis, laboratory investigations, and clinical reasoning, while emphasizing the importance of ethical practice, effective communication, and shared decision-making. The chapter further explores the hierarchy of scientific evidence, critical appraisal of medical literature, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, clinical practice guidelines, and the application of research findings in routine clinical settings.
