Abstract

Cardiovascular medicine encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of diseases affecting the heart and vascular system, which remain the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Advances in clinical research, diagnostic technologies, pharmacotherapy, and interventional cardiology have significantly improved patient outcomes while emphasizing the importance of early detection and evidence-based management. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental principles of cardiovascular medicine, including cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, risk factor assessment, clinical evaluation, diagnostic investigations, and contemporary therapeutic strategies. It discusses common cardiovascular disorders such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathies, peripheral arterial disease, and venous thromboembolic disorders. The chapter highlights the role of electrocardiography, echocardiography, cardiac biomarkers, stress testing, cardiac computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and coronary angiography in establishing accurate diagnoses and guiding treatment decisions. Evidence-based approaches to pharmacological management—including antihypertensive agents, antiplatelet therapy, anticoagulants, lipid-lowering medications, and heart failure therapies—are reviewed alongside interventional procedures such as percutaneous coronary intervention, catheter-based therapies, and cardiac surgery. Preventive cardiology, lifestyle modification, cardiac rehabilitation, and risk reduction strategies are emphasized as essential components of comprehensive cardiovascular care. Emerging innovations, including artificial intelligence-assisted cardiovascular imaging, wearable cardiac monitoring devices, precision medicine, and regenerative therapies, are also explored for their potential to enhance diagnosis and individualized treatment. By integrating clinical assessment with modern diagnostic and therapeutic advances, healthcare professionals can improve cardiovascular outcomes and reduce disease burden.
