Abstract
Clinical genetics and human genomics have transformed modern medicine by providing a comprehensive understanding of the genetic basis of health, disease, and individual variability in treatment response. Advances in molecular biology, next-generation sequencing (NGS), bioinformatics, and precision medicine have enabled clinicians to identify disease-causing genetic variants with greater accuracy and efficiency. These developments have significantly improved the diagnosis, prevention, and management of inherited disorders, rare diseases, congenital anomalies, and genetically influenced common diseases. Human genomics extends beyond single-gene disorders to encompass the study of the entire genome, including gene interactions, epigenetic modifications, and environmental influences on gene expression.
This chapter introduces the fundamental principles of clinical genetics and human genomics, including DNA structure and function, chromosome organization, patterns of inheritance, genetic variation, and genomic technologies. It also discusses the clinical applications of genomic medicine in prenatal diagnosis, newborn screening, oncology, pharmacogenomics, reproductive medicine, and personalized healthcare.
